With inheriting genes from 2 breeds with completely different coats, Doodles can have varying coats from a flat to very curly similar to the Poodle. A general rule of thumb I have found in regards to Doodles and their Grooming - the curlier the coat, the less chance of shedding, but also the greater need for routine amd professional grooming. Poodle hair never stops growing therefore requiring the need for a routine haircut or grooming. The flatter coats may have very slight shedding but are easily brushed an d rarely need professional grooming. If you do not get regular professional grooming here are a few tips to follow...
**Regular Brushing is needed for all coat types. How frequently will depend upon the dog's coat, activity, and environment. **Baths are not needed unless you would like them to have one. Doodles usually love the water and will enjoy a bath, but they do not need often. Only use a gentle shampoo, as most shampoos will remove needed oils from their skin.
** If your dog is covered in mud, just use water, let the dog dry and the dried mud will merely fall from their coat. You may want to confine to a kennel while drying.
** Trim hair under the ear-flaps (against the cheek) short. Keep hair removed from inside ear to prevent ear infections. Doodles will have a varying amount of hair inside the ears. **Sometime keeping the hair trimmed short on their bottom is very helpful and highly recommended, depending upon the coat.
** Check frequently for matts between the toes and trim them out. **Start early Brushing, Bathing, Trimming, and Grooming your new puppy. This will allow the puppy to become accustomed to the different activities and will also be helpful when visiting the vet. The breed is well suited for special work such as Therapy Dog, Assistance Dog, Hearing or Seizure Alert Dog, Guide Dog. They may try to outsmart their owners just for fun, if not firmly disciplined when young. Responds well to positive training methods. Loyal and devoted to families. Most love water and are natural swimmers and retrievers. Affectionate and loving. Active and athletic when free, but should 'melt' into mellowness when touched by human hands." per http://www.petplanet.co.uk/petplanet/breeds/Labradoodle.htm
