 Labradoodle History

The Labradoodle was first deliberately bred in 1989, when Australian breeder Wally Conron first crossed the Labrador Retriever and Standard Poodle for Guide Dogs Victoria. His aim was to combine the low-shedding coat of the Poodle with the gentleness and trainability of the Labrador, and to provide a Guide Dog suitable for people with allergies to fur and dander.

More Info on Goldendoodles and Labradoodles

First Generation Doodles(F1)

50% Labrador (or Golden) Retriever / 50% Standard or Miniature Poodle.  These dogs have a light to no shed, reduced dander and odor, allergy-friendly coat.  The coat will vary from a wispy, wind-blown look, to a wavy or soft fleece type of coat.  Most F1 Doodles have a coat that is very easy to care for, and does not require professional grooming.

Second Generation Doodles (F1b)

25% Labrador (or Golden) Retriever / 75% Poodle.  These dogs have a more consistent non-shedding*, hypo-allergenic*, dander and odor-free* coat, and are great for families with allergies.  The coat will have a fuller appearance and either have a wavy or a loose curl look. Their coat will require regular brushing and may require regular grooming.

Second Generation Doodles (F2)

50% Labrador (or Golden) Retriever / 50% Standard or Miniature Poodle.  These dogs are cross between an F1 and an F1.  They can have a light to no shed, reduced dander and odor, allergy-friendly coat similar to an F1.  However, this cross has the potential to vary greatly and should only be bred by experienced and knowledgeable breeders.

Second Generation Plus Doodles (F2B)

This puppy will be the result of breeding an F1b back to a Poodle.  These dogs normally have more than 75% Poodle and tend to a have a wavier or curly coat. They will be very consistent for non-shedding*, hypo-allergenic*, dander and odor-free* coat, and are great for families with allergies.  Their coat will require regular brushing and possibly regular grooming.

Third and Multi Generation Doodles (F3, F2b, F2B2, etc)

This puppy will be the result of breeding Labradoodle to Labradoodle or Goldendoodle to Goldendoodle and sometimes breeding back to a Poodle for coat correction.  After 5 generations, the Labradoodle is considered a puerbred.  They will be very consistent for non-shedding*, hypo-allergenic*, dander and odor-free* coat, and are great for families with allergies.  Their coat may require regular brushing and also may require regular grooming.

*No dog is guaranteed to be Shed Free, Hypo Allergenic or Dander/Odor Free.

Coat

As shown in the pictures on this page, Doodles come in a variety of coat textures from straight to bushy to wavy to loose curly hair and everything in between.  Colors include white, silver, cream, caramel, apricot, red, café, brown, black, phantom, and parti which is combination of colors.

Size

Doodles can vary in size and weight depending upon the parents.  There are:

  • miniature  (<30 lbs),
  • medium     (30-50lbs)
  • standard    (>50 lbs).

Doodles and Doodles' puppies should be of medium and miniature sizes ranging from 20-45 pounds at maturity depending upon litter and individual puppy.  However, size is not guaranteed in any litter.  Males may be slightly larger than females.

Personality

Doodles of any generation and size make excellent family pets. Doodles are known for their intelligence and companionship. They are eager to learn and please their owner and enjoy the water, retrieving, and family fun.  They are active dogs and require some form of exercise, but are not hyperactive.

Like their parent breeds, both of which are among the world's most intelligent dog breeds, Labradoodles and Goldendoodles are very intelligent and quite trainable. Doodles can be taught to obey verbal and sign language commands.
